Bordeaux shaped bottles are cylindrical, with a round shoulder below the neck. They may be designed to catch sediment on the shoulder while pouring wine. Bordeaux, Tuscany and New World Cabernet Sauvignon on the left and right banks are common in this type of bottle.

Burgundy shaped bottles are wider at the bottom than Bordeaux shaped bottles, and the slope from shoulder to neck is steeper. They are also slightly shorter in height. This design is likely to become popular because it is easy to produce. Burgundy shaped bottles can accommodate a range of wine types, including white wine and red Burgundy wine champagne white wine and red Rhone wine, as well as New World Pinot Noir Chardonnay Shiraz and pomegranate juice wine.

German-shaped bottles are steeper than those in Burgundy. The tall and smooth cylindrical shape of these bottles makes them easy to recognize. This design may traditionally give ships with limited space the ability to store a large number of bottles in the hull. They usually hold white wine, Austrian wine, New World Riesling and German wine from Germany and Alsace, France.
